Lalalala…oh, I’m sorry…is my singing interrupting the meeting?

It’s busy times at work. I work for an online video company, and work has been pretty busy lately. Meetings, writing documents and processes, providing help to dose in need of assistance. I’m having a blast, don’t get me wrong, but every now and then I get a sudden pang of gloom, somewhere in my abdomen… I miss making music!

I play each day, but some days are more constructive and ‘useful’ in terms of getting better or learning new tricks then others. Getting into a song, or into music, always gives a high, a rush that takes you away, and only after several hours have passed, you realize that dawn is breaking, that your feet are completely numb with cold, and that although you’ve promised not to make too much noise to give the neighbors a break, there will be hell to pay in couple of hours. (side note: although I have had as little sleep as the neighbors, usually they are grumpy ones, strange…)

Work is a necessity. It’s fun, but besides that it also provides a roof over my head, food, shelter, challenge (the bottom tier of the Maslow triangle ) Music is also a necessity. Simply because if I don’t listen/make/play music…I get seriously unhappy and distressed.

If someone has found a perfect way to mix the two…do tell!

Choice equals change?

I think it does. Workwise, two weeks ago, when all was the same as it had been for the last 22 months, I decided to make some choices. Fun fact: right after I made that choice, I went to see ‘Yes man’, and I was reassured of the fact that I was on the right path. Yes man the movie is hilarious, although the book (which I luckely read before I saw the movie) brings a little more depth to the whole concept of saying ‘yes’ to life.

So, I said yes to a couple of things, and boy, it certainly changed things. Saying yes to cover for a colleguea of mine while he’s in Venezuela, brought me a lot of ‘extra’ work, but also responsibility, and new chances. To proof myself on other fields then being polite to rude users, or then to oversee the bigger picture of the support department. I can haz ideas now!

I decided to say yes, knowing full well that it would give me extra work, unpaid, weird hours, and if I failed…well. I also knew that is was an overseeable time span, 4 to 6 weeks. With all the excitement going on, I started to like getting to the office again. I started to appreciate the simple work, because it’s a nice break from the work that actually needs dedicated braincells. In short, I’m enjoying myself again :-)

It will be interesting to see how it all turns out. It’s not so much about saying yes to everything. It’s about embracing oppertunities that you would have let slip in the past. Embracing the unknown as an old friend.
