Slippery slopes of covers
Hmm. I’ve just posted my two first recording ever. I’m usually quite fine with the whole concept of covers, since it’s inspiration you need to grow as an artist. There is, a hellofalot I can learn from my recordings. I’m thankful for the original artist’s work, and for the fact that they will most likely not hear how I - what is the proper word for it? - vandalized their songs.
The importance of Being Idle
My first attempt at a recording. As some of you might now, I joined last week, and already described my recording woes in a blogpost. This song, brilliant as it is, deserves someone with a good voice to actually cover it. After trying to sing this for a week, I gave in.
Yesterday, I got some booze flowing, and decided to do it one more time, and whatever the result, I would post it here. Why post something you’re not completely sure of, one might ask? For the purpose of recording & mixing feedback. And, at the same time, to humor my fellow music enthusiasts. A laugh is always good
There is one thing I’m really glad I did, and that was the bass line. The singing…well, no comment. The guitar is alright, but I’m sure I could do a better job recording. All in all, I think it’s a nice first try, but I can learn/improve a lot.
Politik
My second attempt at a recording. Taking some of the advice from this lovely community (becwil) I used a muffler for the singing. (My lucky sock, since I couldn’t find the time to go to the shop during opening hours)
I set of with in the back of my head that the original is so powerful of because of two things. The rhythm, and it’s changes, and singing/lyrics.
Since I’m completely blank with beatgenerators, I decided that I should somehow made up for the lack of drums. I tried to give some extra weight to the bass here and there, and to keep the guitar somewhat tight.
During post production (that wonderful couple of seconds in which Garagaband ‘mixes’ the whole effort to an mp3, something went wrong. It sounds so much different from my own mixing. And, I haven’t been able to correct it.
I had a really fun week, and feel like more knowledgeable already. The fact that sometimes the temperature in my room dropped close to freezing gave it some extra grandeur. Our lovely, yet ex gestapo like landlord, has imposed new ways of saving money on us. Between 11 PM and 5 AM, he shuts down the boiler, leaving warm water running, but not to the general heating system.
Thanks for listening, and sorry for at some time’s hurting your ears
Recording woes
Living in a student flat doesn’t make it easier to record music, despite the fact that during day time basically any amount of noise is tolerated. It’s precisely that fact that makes it impossible, as well as the awkward habit of having strokes of inspiration at three o’clock in the morning.
So, imagine a dog. The dog is quite excited, since he discovered that you brought a special, mince pie flavored ball, and from the simple fact you’re wearing boots, he has deduced that you’re bringing him to a place, possibly wet, by certainly muddy. In short, the tail will be wagging frantically, some woofs of excitement, and genuine happy smile on its face.
That dog is me. Two weeks ago I discovered Garageband. And Icompositions. After a tiresome journey from software to software set, all said to be the best in recording music… Garagaband fell in my lap when I bought a mac mini. If it’s not the best, its certainly the most understandable. Sure, it can be compared with Cubase, but for me it’s perfect.
So, here I am, all excited. I want to record. I don’t care what it is, I’ll do a rendition of my own farts if I have to. So, with the inspiration set to high, I start recording.
I have a condenser usb mic by Samson, and it’s seems alright, except that it records a hellofalot of background noise. Cars driving by, housemates having a good time, etc. So when I don’t want that in my song, I have to record at night. But at night… I make to much noise they say. Feeling my dilemma?
Maybe it’s time to move. Somewhere quiet. Somewhere I can make all the noise I want, and at the same time a place that is quiet when I want it to be.
Hopefully I’ll be able to post my first song soon!
